Your students
Track my Students is the roster side of the console. It lists the cohorts you are attached to, and opening one gives you everything about that group.
The cohort page
| Tab | What is on it |
|---|---|
| Students | Who is in the cohort |
| Courses | Which courses the cohort runs, and who staffs each |
| Enrolments | Each learner's enrolment in each course, with status |
| Grading | Marks for the cohort, per course |
| Submissions | Work handed in by this cohort |
| Schedule | The class timetable |
| Announcements | Messages sent to this cohort |
There is also an All enrolments view across every cohort you teach, for when the question is about a person rather than a group.
Enrolment statuses
An enrolment is a learner taking one course in one cohort, and it carries a status:
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| In progress | Under way |
| Completed | Finished |
| Withdrawn | Left this run |
| Deferred | Paused, expected back |
Withdrawn and Deferred are different, and the difference is kindness as much as bookkeeping. Withdrawn says they are not coming back to this run; deferred says they are. A deferred learner who returns is enrolled into a later cohort, which creates a second attempt — and the better of the two is what counts for them.
If a status looks wrong, it can be changed here. Getting it right matters because it drives what the learner sees, whether they are chased, and what the cohort's completion figures say.
Progress
The Students tab shows how far each person is through the content. Read it for the shape rather than the number:
- Everyone stalled at the same place is a content problem. Go and look at that lesson.
- One person stalled while the cohort moved is a person, and the earlier somebody notices, the better that usually goes.
- Progress at 100% with grades outstanding is normal. Progress counts submitted work; grading is separate.
Your dashboard's Active students panel is the fast version of the same question.
Adding and removing people
Enrolling learners into a cohort is done in the admin console, under Manage Cohorts. If you hold an admin or manager role you will see it in the mode switcher; if you do not, an administrator does it for you.
The reason it lives there rather than here is that enrolment is an organisation-level act with consequences for grades and billing, and it is done in bulk far more often than one at a time.
Announcements
Announcements are how you tell a room something. You can send one to:
- a course you teach — everyone enrolled on it
- a cohort you are attached to — everyone in it
My Announcements lists what you have sent. A cohort or course page has its own Announcements tab and a Make announcement action, which is usually where you want to start, because it has the audience already chosen.
An announcement takes a title, a message, and an importance. You can choose to email it as well as post it in the product.
Three notes:
Learners cannot opt out of announcements. That is deliberate — an organisation addressing its learners is not something they unsubscribe from — so it is worth reserving for things that warrant it. Email everything and you teach people to ignore the channel.
Announcements are not notifications. An announcement is what you chose to tell a room. A notification is what happened to somebody. They live on separate pages, one click apart.
Write the date in the message. "Next Tuesday's class is cancelled" ages badly in a feed.
Getting a message to one person
There is no direct-message feature. For one learner, the right channel is the feedback on their submission, which they are emailed about and which sits permanently against the work it refers to. For anything pastoral, use whatever your organisation already uses for that.
