Glossary

Announcement — A message somebody chose to send to a room: an organisation, a cohort or a course. Deliberate, and not something recipients opt out of. See Notification.

Assignment — Work a learner builds and hands in for a person to mark. Called a project in many organisations. Lives inside a topic.

Attempt — One run at a course by one learner in one cohort. Taking a course twice produces two attempts, each with its own mark. The best is what counts.

Badge — An award for reaching a threshold, in one of seven categories, at one of seven tiers. Has a public share link.

Band — One row of a grade scale: a label with a floor, a ceiling and, where the scale uses them, grade points. "A, from 80, worth 4.0."

Bonus — Points an instructor awards outside the normal scheme, with a reason. Added on top of the 100 the categories share out, not taken from inside it.

Category — A group of work within a course — assignments, quizzes, attendance — each carrying a weight. Weights total 100.

Cohort — A group of people moving through a programme together, with a start date and usually an end date. Part-time or full-time; scheduled or self-paced.

Console — One of the three faces of the product: learning at /, instructor at /instructor, admin at /admin. One sign-in covers all three.

Course — The teaching material: topics, and the lessons, quizzes and assignments inside them. Written once, run many times.

Enrolment — One learner's place in one course in one cohort. Carries a status: in progress, completed, withdrawn or deferred.

Grade scale — The mapping from a percentage to a grade. What turns 74 into a B, a Merit or a Pass. Organisations choose their own.

Lesson — A unit of content: written material, optionally a video, a transcript and attached resources. Completed by the learner pressing a button.

Level — A number derived from total XP. The square root of XP divided by 100, rounded down, plus one.

Manager — A staff role that runs cohorts, courses and enrolments without necessarily teaching. Opens the admin console, minus organisation settings.

Notification — Something that happened to you: work graded, a class moved, a badge earned. Raised by events rather than written by a person. See Announcement.

Offering — One cohort running one course. Teaching staff, the class schedule and every grade belong here. The term you need when a course is taught to more than one group.

Organisation — A tenant. Its own address, branding, people, courses and data, invisible from any other organisation on the platform.

Pathway — An ordered series of courses that adds up to a track or a qualification. Provides the map; does not itself enrol anybody.

Pop-up banner — A timed message shown over the product. The loudest channel available. Configured under Custom Links.

Rubric — The criteria work is judged against, published before it is submitted.

Session — One occurrence of a class on a date. A weekly class for ten weeks is one class and ten sessions. Attendance, notes and recordings belong to a session.

Share link — A public, unguessable address for a badge, a completed course or a profile. Opens without an account, in the issuing organisation's branding.

Streak — Consecutive days of activity. Feeds the streak badges and pays XP at milestones.

Topic — A section of a course. Lessons, quizzes and assignments all belong to one.

XP — Experience points, awarded for completing work and for consistency. Nearly every award is paid once only. Not a grade, and it does not affect one.

The three pairs people mix up

Course and offering. The course is the material. The offering is one cohort running it. Grades live on the offering.

Announcement and notification. An announcement is what somebody said. A notification is what happened.

Class and session. The class is the thing you scheduled. The session is one occurrence of it.
