Grading submissions

The submissions queue lists everything awaiting a mark across every course you teach, newest first. It is the one screen to work from — grading from inside each course means carrying the queue in your head.

The queue

Each row shows the learner, the assignment, when it arrived, and whether it was late. The Reviewer column shows who has picked it up, which is what stops two instructors grading the same submission twice.

Filter by course or cohort when you want to grade one batch in one sitting. Marks are more consistent within a sitting than across several.

Marking

Open a submission and the work appears beside the rubric. Score each criterion; the total is computed. A free-text comment is always available, with or without a rubric.

Feedback is worth more than the mark. The mark tells a learner where they landed; only the comment tells them what to do differently, and that is the part they act on.

Returning work

Grades are returned per submission as you finish each one, and the learner is notified.

To release a whole assignment at once instead — so that no one sees their mark before the rest of the cohort — grade the batch and use Release all on the assignment. Until it is released, your marks are visible to instructors only.

Reopening

Reopening a graded submission lets the learner resubmit. The previous mark and comments are kept on the record rather than overwritten, so the history of what was returned stays intact.
